YANGON: ASEAN's disaster management unit AHA Centre has come out to defend its assessment of the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, following an outcry over the report it had submitted to Myanmar at the end of May.

Repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh to Myanmar’s conflict-torn Rakhine state will be on the table when Asean leaders meet later this month in Bangkok. Also in their hands wil be a report on the positive prospects for repatriation, written by an assessment team that spent months in Rakhine earlier this year. However, any leader convinced that the process will go smoothly would be succumbing to false hope.

We cannot escape anywhere,” says Mohammed Salam, who is the chairman of a local Rohingya Welfare Committee in Rakhine, Myanmar.

“Even those who try to bribe guards at checkpoints are arrested and then disappear.”

The Rohingya, a stateless Muslim minority population hailing mostly from the Rakhine sate, are facing growing pressure in Bangladesh to resettle back into Myanmar.

Military operations in the Rakhine State of Myanmar, have been declared as war crimes after recent investigations. Amnesty International’s report ‘“No one can protect us”: War Crimes and abuses in Myanmar’s Rakhine State’ released on May 29, found that since January 2019, Myanmar military has been conducting acts of violence with complete disregard for civilian lives, resulting in innocent people being injured or killed. The report details military activity including “extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests, torture and other ill-treatment, as well as enforced disappearances”.

DHAKA—Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Sunday that Myanmar does not want the more than 1 million Rohingya refugees currently sheltering in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district to be repatriated.

“Myanmar in no way wants them [Rohingya] back. This is the problem. We are trying to do our part,” the prime minister told a press conference at her official residence, Gonobhaban, in Dhaka when asked about possible solutions to the Rohingya crisis.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina said international volunteer organisations do not want Rohingyas to return to Myanmar.

“We took steps for their repatriation. However, a section of Rohingyas launched a movement against their return. Who instigated them? In fact international volunteers do not want the repatriation,” the prime minister told a press conference at her official residence Ganabhaban on Sunday.
