The loss of forests and the ecological damage caused by almost one million refugees has taken a toll

Bangladesh is paying a heavy price for hosting hundreds of thousands of Muslim Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

According to an article on the Bangladesh Chronicle’s website on April 20, the country has already lost US$211 million worth of forest resources in the Ukhia and Teknaf areas near Cox’s Bazar, where camps have been built and new roads cut through previously uninhabited areas.

Turkish body, national broadcaster will host Rohingya Muslims in Ankara, Istanbul

The Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB) and Turkish broadcaster TRT inaugurated the “Arakan Media Training Program” on Monday.

Rohingya Muslim journalists and students residing in 12 different countries will participate in the program which will be held in Ankara and Istanbul.

Turkey’s state-run aid agency opened a clinic in Rakhine state, homeland of RohingyaMuslims in western Myanmar, on April 22.

The clinic in Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine state, will provide small surgical operations, mother and childcare, and outpatient and general care, said the TurkishCooperationandCoordinationAgency (TİKA).

The Arakan Army is giving more weight to its struggle for self-determination rather than achieving peace in strife-torn Rakhine State, a senior leader of the group said.

Major General Tun Myat Naing, chief of staff of the Arakan Army (AA), told reporters on the sidelines of the 30th anniversary of peace in Wa State in Panghsang city that peace will not come by only praying.

“It is true we want peace. However, for Rakhine people, the right to self-determination is more important. If we get it, peace will automatically follow,” he said.

Prison authorities and police have quelled unrest at Sittwe prison in Rakhine State, apparently caused by some inmates upset that they had been left out of the president’s annual amnesty, a police official said on Sunday.

Local residents rushed to the prison late Saturday after hearing gunfire inside its compound.
