New training project launched for women in Bangladesh refugee communities

A new training project in southeast Bangladesh to promote self-reliance among women in communities hosting refugees, as well as among Rohingya refugee women, has become operational in Cox’s Bazar. The project is potentially a game-changer for women in these communities. It is being supported by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.
UNHCR has teamed up with the Ayesha Abed Foundation (AAF) – the humanitarian arm of our NGO partner BRAC – to support a programme designed to provide income opportunities by developing skills in craft production.

The United Nations' refugee agency has teamed up with Ayesha Abed Foundation -- the humanitarian wing of Brac -- to provide income opportunities by developing skills of Rohingya and Bangladeshi women in craft production in Cox's Bazar.
The project that formally began in February is now being scaled up. At the recently-opened training facility in Ukhiya, local Bangladeshi women are taught silk screen printing, block printing and tailoring, according to a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) statement.

A skills programme promotes self-reliance and aims to transform the lives of rural women in south-eastern Bangladesh.
In a bamboo thatched women’s centre in Kutupalong, more than a dozen Rohingya refugees are sitting closely together on mats and concentrating so fiercely on their sewing that barely a sound can be heard.
Only the encouraging murmurs of a trainer who checks on their progress break the silence of the focused women.

It's high tide in Cox's Bazar and there's a traffic jam right on the beach at Bangladesh's most prominent seaside resort. The lone road that leads south to the sprawling new camps sheltering hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees is closed for repairs. All the traffic has been diverted onto the gray sand beach, where people are taking selfies and strolling in the shallow surf.

Little green rickshaws jostle with passenger vans and pickup trucks to get over a sand dune and back onto the paved roadway to head in the direction of the camps. At high tide, some of the vehicles get stuck in the wet sand, blocking those behind them.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Reuters won two Pulitzer Prizes on Monday, one for revealing the massacre of 10 Muslim Rohingya men by Buddhist villagers and Myanmar security forces, and another for photographs of Central American migrants seeking refuge in the United States.
The awards marked the second year in a row that Reuters has won two Pulitzers, the most prestigious prize in American journalism. Reuters has won seven since 2008.
Two of this year’s honorees have been jailed for 490 days in Myanmar for their role in uncovering the killings.

SEATTLE, Washington — In August 2017, the world watched in horror as the Myanmar military unleashed a brutal campaign in the country’s Rakhine state. Targeting the Rohingya people, a Muslim ethnic minority, the attacks killed an unknown number of men, women and children. Reports of widespread sexual violence, torture and scorched earth tactics drew international condemnation in what the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) called a “’textbook example’ of ethnic cleansing.” The majority of Rohingya refugees are currently living in Cox’s Bazar, a refugee camp in Bangladesh. Although these refugees are now safe from the violence in Myanmar, life in Cox’s Bazar is far from easy.

The situation in the ethnic front is rather grim, with a full scale civil war going on in Rakhine state where the Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army are engaged in heavy fighting resulting in the civil administration coming to a stand still within two months of the ongoing conflict.

Myanmar military chief Gen. Min Aung Hlaing thanked China for countering international pressure on Myanmar over the Rohingya crisis. He praised the Asian Giant as an 'eternal friend' and a 'strategic partner country'.
The military chief described China as a good neighbour for its correct stance and standing against the international community over the Rakhine State issue. Since August 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar to Bangladesh to escape a military crackdown triggered by coordinated attacks on security posts in Rakhine by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army. The United Nations called the military's actions a 'textbook example of ethnic cleansing'.
In 2018, China voted against the UN Human Rights Council's move to establish a body to investigate possible genocide in Myanmar.
