The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR and partners are scaling up emergency preparations to help hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees withstand a second monsoon season in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

3 suspected ‘Rohingya robbers’ killed in ‘gunfight’

Three suspected Rohingya robbers were killed in an alleged 'gunfight' with police in Habiber Ghona hilly area in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Saturday, reports UNB.

The deceased Nur Alam, 23, Mohammad Jubayer, 20 and Hamid Ullah, 21, are residents of 'A-block' of Nayapara Rohingya camp at Hneela union.

Officer-in-charge of Teknaf police station Pradip Kumar Das said that a team of police conducted a drive around 2:30am on information that a gang of robbers was depositing arms in the hilly area.


Sensing the presence of police, the gang members opened fire, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, police retrieved three men sustaining bullet-wounds from the spot.

Later, they died on the way to hospital.

Police also recovered four light weapons from the scene.

The United Nations human rights agency on Friday condemned recent fighting between Myanmar's army and guerrillas of the Rakhine insurgent group known as the Arakan Army.

The spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani, said the agency had "credible reports of the killing of civilians, burning of houses, arbitrary arrests, abductions, indiscriminate fire in civilian areas and damage to cultural property."

Police have detained 115 Rohingyas, including women and children, when they were gathered at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar before being smuggled to Malaysia by sea.

No smuggler could be arrested in the drive on Kachchhapia Dhala area under Hoaikyong union around 8pm on Friday following a tip-off, Teknaf Police Station OC Pradip Kumar Das said.

Myanmar's military says six Rohingya Muslims killed and nine wounded in an aerial attack in the western state of Rakhine this week were affiliated with an armed rebel group.

The army-run Myawady newspaper said the villagers were "together with terrorists while the army was cracking down on the Arakan Army's terrorist activities" on Wednesday in the township of Buthidaung.
