Bangladesh stops Rohingya making risky journey to Malaysia

TEKNAF, Bangladesh: Bangladesh security forces stopped 29 people, mostly Rohingya Muslims, from being smuggled to Malaysia in rickety fishing boats, officials said Saturday (Mar 30), the latest group prevented from leaving squalid refugee camps.

Efforts to provide biometric ID cards to Rohingya refugees scale up

The UN Refugee Agency and the government of Bangladesh are scaling up biometric registration of Rohingya refugees fleeing the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar in order to provide them with biometric ID cards.

The UNHCR announced the efforts after a visit by Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Volker Türk and other agency representatives to the world’s largest refugee settlement, Kutupalong, and meeting with Bengali government officials. Türk lauded efforts by Bangladesh’s government and host communities to support the refugees.

Rohingya trio deported to Myanmar

Three Rohingya, including a woman, were deported to Myanmar via Moreh in Manipur on Thursday. The three had been caught in 2013 for illegally entering Assam.

"We coordinated with Manipur police and Myanmar authorities for the deportation of the Rohingya people," Sader Ali, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Assam's Sonitpur district, said on Friday.

The three were lodged at a detention camp for foreigners in Sonitpur district headquarters Tezpur. They belonged to the family of five other Rohingya who had been deported to Myanmar on January 3. Mr Ali was in charge of the deportation process that involved Moreh's sub-divisional police officer Binoy Chongtham.

The deported trio was identified as Emam Hussain, 55, Mohammed Saresh, 20, and Rafiqa Begin, 18. Police said they were from a village under Bathidung police station in Myanmar.

India continues zero tolerance for Rohingya infiltrators, 3 more deported to Myanmar

Guwahati: Three more Rohingyas were deported on Thursday to Myanmar via Manipur’s Moreh along the India-Myanmar border. One among the three deported is a girl.

The three Rohingyas, who had illegally entered India in 2013, were lodged in a foreigner detention camp inside the Tezpur jail in Assam’s Sonitpur district after they had been found guilty of illegally entering the country.

Over the past four months, the Arakan Army (AA)—a Rakhine Ethnic Armed Organisation (EAO)—has emerged as a formidable insurgent actor in western Myanmar, particularly Chin and Rakhine states. The AA’s insurgency is based on a mix of conventional and subversive tactics, aimed at gaining strategic dominance in the short term and political-territorial control in the medium-to-long term. Much of its future strategies and operational design will depend on its relationship with the local population and the frequency and degree of the military’s response.

Bangladesh has sought strong and unremitting support from the United Kingdom to end the Rohingya crisis and ensure their safe repatriation to Myanmar.

“We would like to see UK's sustained diplomatic leadership in UN in New York, Geneva and the Security Council, for safe and sustainable return of Rohingyas to Myanmar," said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam, while addressing the 49th Bangladesh Independence and National Day reception in London on March 27.

The reception was organised by Bangladesh High Commission in London at International Maritime Organization .
