Senators ask US to sanction Myanmar army chief

Senators called Wednesday for the United States to slap sanctions on Myanmar’s army chief, saying more needed to be done to bring accountability over the campaign against the Rohingya.

In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, the four senators said Myanmar has shown “no credible signs of progress” despite widespread international condemnation of the killings and sexual violence against members of the mostly Muslim minority.

Volker Türk, the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, concluded his visit to Bangladesh today, following high-level discussions with the Government of Bangladesh on the pursuit of solutions to the Rohingya refugee crisis.

“Trust us.” That’s the implicit message in the Myanmar military’s announcement this week of the creation of an “investigation court” to probe the state-backed mass violence targeted at the country’s Muslim Rohingya population in August 2017.

The announcement on the website of the Office of the Commander in Chief of Defense Services describes the court as consisting of three senior military (Tatmadaw) officials tasked to “further scrutinize” the bloodshed of August 2017. It reiterates the military’s long-discredited narrative that all military activity in northern Rakhine state in August 2017 were legitimate operations in response to attacks on police posts allegedly perpetrated by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, a non-state insurgent group.

A Myanmar court on Tuesday sentenced a prominent ethnic Rakhine leader to 20 years in jail for treason, a verdict likely to intensify anger amid fighting between the ethnic group and the army.

Security forces tried to calm hundreds of supporters outside the court in Rakhine state capital Sittwe as Aye Maung was escorted to a waiting police van following the verdict.

Ethnic political parties on Tuesday said they are disappointed by a Rakhine State court’s decision to sentence politician U Aye Maung and author U Wai Hin Aung to a combined 22 years in prison for treason and sedition.

The Sittwe Township Court sentenced U Aye Maung, the founder of the Arakan National Party, to 20 years in prison for treason and U Wai Hin Aung to two years for sedition.

YANGON — Fighting between Myanmar's military and ethnic Rakhine insurgents has now reached the ancient temples of Mrauk U, the former capital of the Rakhine kingdom and a popular tourist site, local residents said Monday.

Rakhine state in Myanmar's west is riven with ethnic and religious divisions.

It came under the global spotlight after the bloody 2017 army crackdown that forced some 740,000 Rohingya Muslims over the border into Bangladesh.

CIS, APADM officials visit Rohingya camps, host communities

Community Initiative Society and Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management officials visited Rohingya camps and host communities in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday, said a press release.

The CIS arranged the field visit at Hakimpara and Jamtoli Rohingya camps.

The APADM officials from Japan, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka and the Philippines visited the camps and host communities.

Bangladesh is once again calling for the establishment of safe zones for the Rohingya in Myanmar, so that it can begin resettling some of the 1 million or so refugees in its care around the district of Cox's Bazar . This is not the first time that the government in Dhaka has pushed for this. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina pressed Myanmar on the issue before the U.N. General Assembly in September 2017.
