Rohingya-born Bangladeshi citizen Razia Sultana has been awarded the United States’ International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award for her work with Rohingya refugees.

She is among the 10 extraordinary women from around the world who will be honoured this year, said a press release from the State Department of United States issued today.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 — The Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia Response and Relief Team (Imaret) has dispatched a team of medical volunteers to the Home Ministry’s complex in Kangar, to provide medical treatment to Rohingya refugees yesterday.

Imaret coordinating chief, Dr Ahmad Munawwar Helmi Salim, said the team from Penang and Perak headed by Dr Ahmad Zaimi Abdul Latif, arrived at the complex at about 10.30am before starting treatment sessions for the refugees who were found on the Perlis coast last Friday.

There are those who will argue that this story wreaks like a bowel movement but someone has to do it. And so do the roughly 900,000 Rohingya refugees stuck in camps in Bangladesh, every day.

On February 1, aid agency OXFAM and UNHCR opened the Centralized Fecal Sludge Management Plant (CFSMP) at Bangladesh’s Kutupalong refugee camp, the largest such fecal waste plant in any refugee camp on the planet.

Yesterday was my first day in the camps. Haythem, from one of our partner organizations, met me and my traveling companion/friend/photographer Rares Michael Ghilezan at the airport at Cox’s Bazar. We quickly dropped off our luggage and then we were off to the camps, anxious about whether or not we would even be permitted to enter. The camp administration has stopped issuing passes to foreigners since an incident a few weeks ago when a team of documentarians was attacked because some refugees mistook them for traffickers when they led some children away to fetch sweets from a food stand.
