Triggered by a wave of rebel attacks, the recent surge in hostilities in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state marks an ominous watershed in a hitherto low-intensity conflict between Arakan Army (AA) insurgents and government forces.

Bangladesh urged the United Kingdom to send back all the criminals convicted by Bangladesh courts but were living in the UK.

‘You should send back all the criminals who have been convicted by our courts,’ foreign minister AK Abdul Monen told outgoing British high commissioner Alison Blake without mentioning the name of any convicted criminal.

While talking to reporters at his office, the foreign minister said that he had told the British ambassador that the UK should send back all the convicted criminals if they claimed that their justice system was fair and they believed in law and fairness.

Rohingyas are an extra burden for Bangladesh in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), said a top official at Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

A team of International Criminal Court (ICC) arrives today for a week-long visit for “preliminary investigation” into forced deportations of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar into Bangladesh.

Chief ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda is leading the seven-member team, which will visit Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar and speak with refugees.

 PUTRAJAYA - Malaysia on Tuesday (March 5) formed a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to formally probe the shocking discovery in 2015 of mass graves and human trafficking activities in northern Perlis state, with the victims believed to be stateless Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

Malaysia's Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin handed appointment letters to the seven panel members, saying the new government is committed to uncovering the truth and bringing the culprits to justice, Malay Mail online news reported.

The OIC has unanimously adopted a resolution to move at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for establishing the legal rights of the Rohingyas and addressing the question of accountability and justice.

The Bangladesh foreign ministry termed the resolution adopted by grouping of Muslim countries in the Abu Dhabi meeting on Monday a “major diplomatic breakthrough”.

A UN-created “safe zone” for Rohingya refugees in Myanmar’s western Rakhine State, floated in recent weeks by Bangladesh’s foreign minister, appears nowhere near reality despite reports to the contrary in Bangladeshi media.

On Monday, Malaysia ratified the Rome Statute, making it the 124th State party to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The decision to join the ICC after 20 years of resistance is not only a welcome development but highlights the importance of long-term persistence in the pursuit of human rights protections.

Following a military crackdown in August 2017 in Rakhine State, Myanmar, an estimated 700,000 Rohingya refugees fled to Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh. Previous influxes were recorded in October 2016, when approximately 87,000 people crossed into Bangladesh, and other waves were registered during the previous decades. The total number of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, including those residing in the district prior to August 2017 is estimated to be 925,000 individuals.

Aligarh: A good community leader, says Mohammad Zafar (24), should have three qualities: “Thanda dimagh, padhai-likhai, aur aadmi se nafrat nahi honee chahiye (He should have a cool head, be educated, and have no hatred toward anyone).”

Since 1962, Myanmar has been, in one form or another, under autocratic military control, punctuated by disregard for civil rights and democratic institutions. Only recently did the military regime slowly shift towards democracy, holding democratic elections in 2010, the first in nearly half a century. However, in 2016, the military began a state-led persecution against the nation’s Muslim minority. This varying progress on liberalization has led to much frustration on the part of outside observers.
