Rohingyas denounce ARSA

NEWAGE

Published:Dec 08,2021

Twenty two Rohingya organisations in a statement on Tuesday denounced the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army for the latter’s recent activities and criminal associations along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

In the statement, they branded the ARSA, also known as Harakah Al Yakeen, as a criminal group.

They also appealed to the Bangladesh government and to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to work together to respond promptly when refugees report imminent threats, to provide immediate and effective protection to those in danger, and to ensure effective protection for those who report incidents.

Rohingya Denounces ARSA

We, the undersigned Rohingya organizations, denounce the so-called "Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army – ARSA" (or Harakah Al Yakeen), a criminal group that self-proclaims to be fighting for the rights of the Rohingya people. The Rohingya community does not accept ARSA as a group that represents the ideals and interests of the Rohingya community in or outside of Burma. Thus, the group must not claim it represents the interests of the Rohingya nation.

Rohingya genocide: Facebook faces massive $200 bn legal action in UK, US

Lawyers in the UK and the US on Monday initiated coordinated legal campaigns against Facebook, now known as Meta, on behalf of Rohingya Muslims for its alleged role in facilitating the genocide perpetrated by the Myanmar regime and extremist civilians against the Rohingya people.

According to the lawyers, Facebook contributed to the 2017 genocide of Rohingya Muslims by allowing hate speech against the persecuted minority to be propagated in Myanmar. The United Nations had described the violence as "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

BANGKOK (AP) — An army vehicle plowed into a peaceful march by anti-government protesters in military-ruled Myanmar’s biggest city, reportedly killing at least three people, witnesses and a protest organizer said.

Sunday’s march was one of at least three held in Yangon, and similar rallies were reported in other parts of the country a day ahead of an expected verdict in the first of about a dozen criminal cases against former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was toppled in a military takeover on Feb. 1.

Rohingya, Justice, and Lessons from History

“The voluntary and dignified return of Rohingya will not be possible without addressing current human rights and humanitarian crisis stemming from the attempted coup by the Myanmar military. At the root of these crises is the military who continues to be able to enjoy blanket impunity.

While the military junta continues its scorched earth offensives, particularly in Chin State, Sagaing Region, and Karenni State, a missed deadline to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding steps that Myanmar has taken to prevent ongoing genocide against the Rohingya reminds the world that the military’s brutal violence we see today did not begin with its illegal coup attempt of the 1st of February. The ongoing persecution of the Rohingya, highlighted by civil society organizations, should have been a tipping point to catalyze a more effective, coordinated international response.

By the principle of “universal justice”, Argentina will investigate crimes against humanity against the Rohingya community in Myanmar

The news came late due to the time difference. The six women of the Rohingya community, living as refugees in Bangladesh and who dared to tell that they had been raped by the military of their country while murdering their family, felt “relief and hope”. It is that they had just heard how thousands of kilometers away the Argentine Justice had resolved open a criminal case to investigate the crimes to which they and their community were subjected.

The Argentinian judiciary has taken a step to open a case against the Myanmar military – including Min Aung Hlaing and much of the current junta’s senior leadership – over the genocide against the Rohingyas, Burmese Rohingya Organization UK (BROUK) has said.

Argentina’s justice system will investigate allegations of war crimes committed by the Myanmar military against that country’s Rohingya minority under a court ruling upholding the principles of “universal justice”.

The appeals court decision, which Agence France-Presse has seen, overturns a lower court ruling rejecting a request for an investigation by the British-based Burmese Rohingya Organisation (BROUK).

Despite sanctions, Italy continues to import wood from Myanmar

asianews
11/27/2021

A report by the Environmental Investigation Agency exposes the still flourishing trade. Teak is supplied to the rest of Europe, mainly in boatbuilding, such as luxury yachts. In Chin State, the military set fire to houses in a city abandoned by its residents because of the violence.

Yangon (AsiaNews) – The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), an international NGO dedicated to investigating environmental crime and abuse, found that more than 300 tonnes of timber worth € 2 million (US$ 2.3 million) arrived in Italy from Myanmar, this despite the impositions of sanctions by the European Union last June.

The economic sanctions, which the international community imposed after a military coup on 1 February, target the state-owned Myanmar Timber Enterprise, which is responsible for the teak trade. This type of hardwood is used mainly in luxury boatbuilding.

Argentina’s judiciary has agreed to open a genocide case brought by Rohingya victims of atrocities committed by Myanmar’s military, in a move hailed by victims and their advocates as a historic step toward bringing the country’s ruling generals to justice.

The case was brought in Buenos Aires by a UK-based Rohingya group and six female survivors of the military’s 2017 crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, where security forces killed thousands, committed rapes and drove about 750,000 members of the long-persecuted minority into Bangladesh.

They Warned Their Names Were on a Hit List. They Were Killed

At night in the refugee camps, with only a thin tarpaulin wall as protection, Mohammed waits for the men to come and kill him.

In less than a month, assassins have killed at least eight people in the Rohingya refugee settlements of southeastern Bangladesh, silencing those who have dared to speak out against the violent gangs that plague the camps. As with Mohammed, the militants threatened their victims before they killed, leaving their targets in a perpetual panic.

“I am living under the knife of a fearful and depressing life,” said Mohammed, a community organiser whose full name is not being used because of the documented risks he faces. “I came to Bangladesh from Myanmar because I would be killed there. Here, also, there are no guarantees for a safe life.”

China Should Resolve The Rohingya Refugee Crisis As Soon As Possible – OpEd

China should resolve the Rohingya refugee crisis as soon as possible for ensuring the greater interest of South Asia and South East Asia to some extent its own interest.

For South Asia in general and for Bangladesh as well, the Rohingya crisis is one of the burning issues for a while. As an extra regional power, however, the role of China is very critical here—not only because of her long-standing involvement in the South Asian region but also China being one of the P5 members of the UN Security Council. Nevertheless, it is time Beijing acknowledged and shifted her compass over to the humanitarian grounds and the plight of the Rohingyas rather than maintaining an esoteric image.

Myanmar’s junta kills off all economic hope

As Myanmar descends deeper and deeper into civil war, a conflict driven by nationwide resistance to the military’s disastrous democracy-suspending coup, the economy is taking the brunt of the chaotic collateral damage.

The February 1 coup sparked countrywide labor strikes, runs on banks and now rising warfare punctuated by bomb blasts in key urban areas including the commercial capital of Yangon.

That’s all put the economy in a tailspin while raising stability risks that have caused a growing number of foreign investors to either suspend or abandon their operations and outlays, many committed earlier on the belief Myanmar’s “last frontier” market was moving in a new hopeful democratic direction.
