WFP to implement $35m project for Rohingya refugees

The UN World Food Programme will implement a $35 million project to provide work opportunities and community services among the Rohingya population in Cox's Bazar.

This funding is part of the World Bank's $165 million grant meant to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. The WFP is partnering with the disaster management ministry to implement the project.

The US Embassy will urge the Rakhine State Government to be effective in aid provision to Rakhine IDPs, the Yangon based US Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission Mr George Neil Sibley has confirmed while meeting with Rakhine State Parliamentarians.

According to Deputy Speaker U Myat Than, who spoke with Narinjara, Mr George Neil Sibley said this while being received by the Rakhine Parliament Speaker U San Kyaw Hla on February 20th.

WFP in Bangladesh welcomes a new contribution of £8 million from the United Kingdom to support the Rohingya refugees

DHAKA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Bangladesh welcomes a new contribution of GBP 8 million (USD10,296,010) from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) to support the Rohingya refugee response in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

This new contribution will support WFP to provide 270,600 refugees with life-saving assistance over three months through electronic vouchers (e-vouchers). This programme allows refugees to purchase a variety of food items from 25 WFP e-voucher outlets across the Rohingya refugee camps.

At a regular briefing in Geneva on Friday, WFP spokesperson Hervé Verhoosel explained that it costs the food-assistance branch of the global body $16 million every month to feed almost 900,000 Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar

The World Food Programme (WFP), the food-assistance branch of the United Nations, has warned that the situation in regards to feeding hundreds of Rohingyas sheltered in Cox’s Bazar could deteriorate ‘rapidly’ if the adequate funding is not made available.

Since 4 July, heavy monsoon rains and wind have pounded the refugee camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, with deaths, displacement and major damage following in their wake, the World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday. 

Those in the most vulnerable living situations have been relocated to safer, newly developed land in the camps”, WFP Spokesperson Herve Verhoosel told the regular news briefing in Geneva, noting that 5,600 people had been displaced.

Bangladesh is not in a hurry to relocate Rohingya refugees to a Bay of Bengal island, a minister told Reuters on Monday, after the United Nations sought more details on the government's plan, criticised by some human rights groups.




Bangladesh wants to move 100,000 of the nearly 1 million Rohingya Muslims sheltered in cramped camps in its southeastern district of Cox's Bazar to the remote island, known as Bhasan Char which it has been developing for the past two years.

The United Nations is making plans to help Bangladesh with the move, Reuters reported last week.

Myanmar security forces have shelled villages and blocked civilians from accessing food and humanitarian assistance in western Rakhine state since early 2019, a rights groups said Monday.

“Security forces have also used vague and repressive laws to detain civilians in the area,” according to the Amnesty International report based on fresh evidence on ongoing military operations.
