UK committed to play role in UNSC on Rohingya plight: Lord Ahmad

The UK government is committed to continuing its role in the UN Security Council (UNSC) to highlight the plight of the Rohingyas, says British Minister of State for South Asia and the Commonwealth at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon.

He praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for hosting over a million Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar and reassured that the UK would continue to stand alongside both the Rohingya community and the government of Bangladesh.

The United Kingdom on Wednesday stressed the need for keeping the Rohingya issues alive on the international platforms including the UN Security Council for mounting pressure on Myanmar for ensuring repatriation of the members of the community to Rakhine.

‘Myanmar must remain on the agenda’ of the UNSC and likeminded countries would require to work together on the matter, British high commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson said in a talk held on a web platform with Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh in Dhaka.

Turkey to raise Rohingya issue at next UNSC meet

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has promised to raise the Rohingya issue at the next UN Security Council meeting.
He made the promise while talking to Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on phone on Saturday.

The Turkish foreign minister said his country would continue all kinds of cooperation for the safe return of the Rohingya refugees residing in Bangladesh to Myanmar.

European member states of the United Nations called for Myanmar on Tuesday to take measures to hold to account those responsible for committing human rights violations against Rohingya Muslims after the Security Council failed to support an order by the international body’s top court to protect members of the minority group.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. Security Council on Tuesday discussed the International Court of Justice’s order that Myanmar must do all it can to prevent genocide against the Rohingya Muslims, but failed to agree on a statement.

Myanmar’s ally China as well as Vietnam, which is part of the regional Association of Southeast Nations along with Myanmar, objected, diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed.

Diplomats bash Myanmar’s human rights record after Security Council closed-door meeting

Myanmar must start prosecuting those responsible for atrocities against its mostly-Muslim Rohingya minority and uphold decisions by international judges, European diplomats said Tuesday in New York.

Speaking with reporters after a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council, Estonia’s Ambassador Sven Jurgenson, said last month’s ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague must be followed.
