Myanmar team visits Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar

A nine-member Myanmar delegation visited Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar on Wednesday and interacted with Rohingyas in an effort to convince them to return to their homes in Rakhine state, reports UNB. 

They will talk to Rohingyas at the camp on Thursday before they leave Cox's Bazar for Dhaka in the afternoon, an official told UNB.

 UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner Kelly T. Clements today said it is difficult to say exactly when the environment will be conducive for Rohingya repatriation.

Kelly T. Clements said this while addressing a press conference at a hotel in Dhaka on the outcome of her recent visit in Cox’s Bazar.

“It is extremely difficult to say exactly when the environment will be conducive for Rohingya repatriation,” the UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner said responding to a query.

US senators mull more pressure on Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation

After visiting Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar that hosted over 1.1 million forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals, New York State Senators are planning to ask their federal colleagues to put more efforts in ensuring sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh. 

“Hopefully, we will talk to our federal representatives to engage more in efforts to put pressure on Myanmar so Rohingya people can return (to Myanmar),” New York State Senator Luis Sepulveda told BSS after concluding a one-week visit here.

The claim by the Myanmar Embassy in Dhaka, on the repatriation of 29 Rohingyas from Bangladesh, is nothing but propaganda, said a top official involved in managing Rohingyas in Bangladesh.

Myanmar must guarantee the rights of Rohingyas and take confidence building measures to create a conducive environment for their return to their place of origin in Rakhine State, Bangladesh has conveyed to the United Nations.

“For the repatriation to happen, Myanmar has to guarantee the rights of Rohingyas and take confidence building measures for their return,” said lawmaker Abdul Majid Khan, a member of the parliamentary standing committee on ministry of foreign affairs.

Bangladesh on Tuesday sent Myanmar a fresh list of some 50,000 Rohingya refugees currently taking shelter in the country's Cox’s Bazar refugee camp.

With the new list, Dhaka has provided the names of some 105,000 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar over three phases, in order to expedite their repatriation process to Myanmar.

Following two failed attempts to repatriate the Rohingyas, Bangladesh officials stated, on October 3, 2019, that Bangladesh would not make a third, to begin the repatriation of hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas sheltered in the Cox’s Bazar District, along the Bangladesh-Myanmar International Border. An unnamed Foreign Ministry official stated, “We are not going to make any attempt before being sure that the repatriation will actually happen. Even if the repatriation starts in a small scale, that will be a good thing.”

Myanmar has rejected an offer by China to facilitate a visit by a group of Rohingya refugees to its Rakhine state to investigate the situation there ahead of a possible repatriation from temporary camps across the border in Bangladesh, a senior Myanmar foreign ministry official confirmed Thursday.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told reporters on Wednesday that Myanmar’s government had dismissed the proposal, originally floated by Li Jiming, the new Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh, during talks with Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar last month and formally discussed during a meeting last week between Myanmar, Chinese and Bangladeshi delegates on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The United States has announced more than $127 million in new humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees, while the leaders of Bangladesh and Malaysia called on Myanmar to create conditions for repatriating the stateless people.

More than 740,000 Rohingya fled from Myanmar’s Rakhine state to neighboring Bangladesh amid a brutal counter-offensive launched by the military in response to attacks by Rohingya insurgents on border police and army posts in August 2017.

The Myanmar government has adopted a new propaganda front in regard to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa) to further delay the repatriation of the Rohingyas currently sheltered in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, multiple sources have told Dhaka Tribune.

China is still offering mediation after two failed attempts to help Myanmar and Bangladesh start the process to repatriate Rohingya refugees.
Newly-appointed Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming on Thursday said China would play “more constructive role” in resolving the crisis.

He made the remarks to journalists after his maiden meeting with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at his office.

Bangladesh needs to have deeper political engagement with Myanmar as well as allies of both the countries – China, Japan and India – for sustainable solution to Rohingya crisis, experts and diplomats said today. 


Apart from Bangladesh government, national and international civil society, non-government organisations (NGOs) and human rights organisations also need to keep up pressure on Myanmar for a sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas, they said.

BNP blames govt for failure to repatriate Rohingyas

BNP on Friday alleged that the government has diplomatically failed to initiate the repartition of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.

“The government couldn’t do anything to start the repatriation of Rohingyas. It's been a long time since they (Rohingyas) came here, but you (govt) couldn't still send any of them,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. He further said, “It’s an utter failure. You’ve failed diplomatically to send the Rohingyas back.”

BNP vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mitoo said the government is not serious about sending back Rohingyas to their homeland Rakhine state in Myanmar. Mentioning that the ruling government an unelected one, the BNP leader said the government failed to mount global pressure over Myanmar authority to take back their people from Bangladesh. He also said the incumbent government has not been getting enough global support over this crucial situation as they were not an elected government.

 TEKNAF, BANGLADESH - Rohingya refugees living in camps in Bangladesh said Wednesday that they did not want to return to their homes in Myanmar, raising doubts about a fresh attempt to repatriate the stateless, mainly Muslim minority.

On Thursday, Bangladesh and Myanmar were hoping to begin repatriating a few of the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees who fled a military crackdown two years ago, after a previous attempt in November failed.
