Cox's Bazar administration, IOM reaffirm collaboration to tackle human trafficking

 Cox's Bazar district administration and IOM on Thursday reaffirmed their continued collaboration to counter human trafficking in the coastal district currently hosting over a million forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals.

According to IOM data, between September 2017 and June this year, 655 victims of trafficking (45 percent Rohingya and 55 percent local Bangladeshis) were identified and assisted by IOM and its partners in Cox’s Bazar.

Rescued Rohingya grateful for local support after 120 days stranded at sea

 EU partner IOM Indonesia continues to provide round-the-clock care to the 99 Rohingya rescued and allowed to disembark in North Aceh last week after more than 120 days stranded at sea. Concerns are raising about another boat with 500 Rohingya on board, according to authorities in Jakarta.


Malaysian officials have also reported that at least 300 are on a vessel off the Coast of Koh Adang Island in Thailand. No further details are available but roughly, 1,400 Rohingya have been stranded at sea during the 2020 sailing season, which typically ends with the arrival of the monsoon in late May. At least 130 have died according to various estimates.

For years, Rohingya have travelled by sea to Malaysia where they hope to find work and reunite with family members

International Organization for Migration (IOM) has said they are "increasingly concerned" about the plight of hundreds of Rohingyas believed to be stranded at sea, noting that cyclone Amphan signalled a ferocious start to the cyclone season in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.

IOM, Japan build solar-powered water supply network for 30,000 Rohingyas

Cox’s Bazar, July 31 (UNB) - One of the world’s largest humanitarian solar water systems was officially inaugurated on Wednesday by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and partner the Japan International Development Agency (JICA).

The network will provide safe, clean water to approximately 30,000 people living in the Kutupalong Mega-Camp from a deep underground well.

Community advocates are presenting a role play at the launch of the community advocates initiative "Poribortok!"


Cox’s Bazar – Samuda Begum wants to ensure her community’s women are aware about their human rights and concerns especially about the issues surrounding early marriage, household violence, and physical and sexual assault, so that they can lead life as human beings with dignity and respect.

Standing on the podium, the middle-aged Samuda, a Rohingya woman living in one of the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, expressed her wish before hundreds of people from her community on Tuesday. With such courage, she has included her name in the list of Community Advocates, a group initiated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and its local partner PULSE Bangladesh.

Cox’s Bazar – When Cyclone Fani – one of the most powerful Indian Ocean storms of the past decade – barrelled up the Bay of Bengal a week ago making landfall in northern India and western Bangladesh, it left 24 people dead, a trail of destruction and thousands displaced. Some 2.6 million people – a million in India and 1.6 million in Bangladesh – were evacuated from its path, potentially saving thousands of lives.

Following a military crackdown in August 2017 in Rakhine State, Myanmar, an estimated 700,000 Rohingya refugees fled to Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh. Previous influxes were recorded in October 2016, when approximately 87,000 people crossed into Bangladesh, and other waves were registered during the previous decades. The total number of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, including those residing in the district prior to August 2017 is estimated to be 925,000 individuals.

Following a smaller refugee influx in 2016, over 700,000 refugees subsequently fled across the border in August 2017, at a speed and scale surpassing greatly previous influxes.
