The Bangladesh government should immediately allow hundreds of Rohingya refugees stranded in two trawlers in the Bay of Bengal to come ashore, Human Rights Watch has said.
The stranded Rohingya need necessary food, water, and health care, the human right group said in a statement on Saturday, citing a UNHCR warning that the Rohingya may have been at sea for weeks without adequate food and water.

UN rights body should reject misuse of “deradicalization” agenda as pretext for violations

Interactive Dialogue with Special Rapporteur on Promotion & Protection of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism

Thank you, Madam Special Rapporteur,

Your report on the potentially damaging human rights consequences of overly broad state agendas relating to Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism could not be more timely.

This very session, China is presenting a draft resolution on “the role of counter-terrorism and deradicalization in promoting and protecting human rights.”

As your report makes clear, the pitfalls of such an approach are numerous: the lack of definitional clarity around concepts such as “extremism” and “deradicalization” is often used as a cloak for sweeping rights violations. Restrictive policies and programs are often based more on stereotypes than science.

Is Myanmar guilty of genocide?

THE ASEAN POST

Rohingya refugees watch on a mobile phone a live feed of Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's appearance at the UN's International Court of Justice, in a refugee camp in Cox's Bazar on 11 December, 2019.

It was recently reported that Myanmar had conceded that it had committed “war crimes” against its Rohingya Muslim community. This is as far as Myanmar has ever gone in admitting responsibility for the atrocities committed against its Rohingya minority. Still, to some observers, this is not good enough.

The Bangladeshi government is violating the right to education of nearly 400,000 Rohingya children residing in the country, a rights group claimed Tuesday.

Rohingya children are prohibited from enrolling in local schools, Human Rights Watch (HRW) says, basing the allegation on interviews with teachers, aid workers, government officials and more than 150 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. More than 700,000 mostly-Muslim Rohingya refugees from majority-Buddhist Myanmar’s western Rakhine state live in crowded camps in the country.

Clampdown on Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh, Human Rights Watch calls for end to restrictions on movement, Internet

The Milli Gazette Online
Published Online: Sep 08, 2019
New York: The Bangladesh government should end restrictions on Rohingya refugees’ freedom of movement and access to the internet and online communications, Human Rights Watch said today. Government restrictions have intensified following a failed attempt to repatriate refugees to Myanmar, a large rally by Rohingya refugees, and the killings of a local politician and four refugees.

“Bangladesh authorities have a major challenge in dealing with such a large number of refugees, but they have made matters worse by imposing restrictions on refugee communications and freedom of movement,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “The authorities should take a level-headed approach instead of overreacting to tensions and protests by isolating Rohingya refugees in camps.”
