Police inBangladesh arrested three suspects believed to have links to an armed insurgent group among Rohingya refugees, as officials promised justice for the killers of a prominent Rohingya rights activist.

“The killers will certainly be brought to justice. None will be spared,” Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said on Saturday, three days after the murder of Mohib Ullah, the head of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH).

The search for the killers of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah continues in Bangladesh.

Police in Bangladesh have arrested three suspects believed to have links to an armed insurgent group among Rohingya refugees, as officials promised justice for the killers of a prominent Rohingya rights activist.

"The killers will certainly be brought to justice. None will be spared," Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said on Saturday, three days after the murder of Mohib Ullah, the head of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH).

Zaifur Hussein, 50, managed to escape the fire that swept through the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps in March, but he lost his home. While taking refuge with friends, Hussein witnessed dozens of people dying – and how the fences around the camps made it difficult to get out.

Hussein’s story was one of those shared by Reuters news agency in its coverage of the disaster. The March 2021 fire had a devastating effect on these camps, where more than a million refugees live in southern Bangladesh. Black smoke billowed over burning huts and tents as people scrambled to retrieve their possessions.

Covid-19 vaccination campaign for Rohingyas in the refugee camps of Cox's Bazar will begin tomorrow, reports our local correspondent quoting the district's civil surgeon.

Md Mahbubur Rahman, Cox's Bazar district civil surgeon, told The Daily Star that the vaccination campaign will begin 11am tomorrow at the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhia, Cox's Bazar. Syed Rezwan Hayat, the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), will accompany him.

In a historic development, Rohingya women have described how the Myanmar military carried out a brutal massacre in their village, in an Argentinean court of law, under the aegis of universal jurisdiction.

Speaking remotely to the Federal Criminal Appeals Court in Buenos Aires from Cox's Bazar on Tuesday, the women told how soldiers killed their husbands in Chuk Pyin, Rakhine, Myanmar, according to a statement from the Burmese Rohingya Organization UK (BROUK).

NHCR, the UN refugee agency, has said it is in contact with Rohingya communities both on Bhasan Char and in Cox's Bazar to support further rescue efforts following Saturday's boat capsize in Bay of Bengal.

Fire victims at Rohingya camp get relief materials

Faith in Action, a non-governmental organization, in collaboration with the international organization KNH Germany, distributed the relief materials among the fire victims at Rohingya camp-9 under Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar on Friday.

A total of 560 Rohingya, persecuted Myanmar citizen, fire victims of 125 families got relief materials which included three lungis, 12 T-shirts, 8 pairs of sandals, two blouses, one scarf, two trousers, two pillows, two bedsheets, and two bags, according to a press release.

As Bangladesh continues to struggle to provide adequately for the Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, near the border with Myanmar, the best possible solution for everyone involved — from the Rohingya themselves to their hosts — would be if the refugees could safely return home to their ancestral lands. But, whereas the previous government of Myanmar under Aung San Suu Kyi at least pretended it was interested in allowing the Rohingya to return, the new military junta has already indicated it will stop pretending altogether.

“Amidst the unstable conditions that we are living in, coming to the Women-Led Community Center gives us the opportunity to invest our time, energy and skills into a productive activity that can benefit us and the women in our community,” says Junaida, a young Rohingya woman living in the sprawling Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.

Since January 2021, Junaida has been coming to the UNFPA-supported Women-Led Community Center in her camp to receive training on producing reusable sanitary pads for women in the Rohingya community. The aim of the initiative is to support Rohingya women to take care of their menstrual hygiene in a sustainable manner, as well as to give them the opportunity to cope with the stress caused by the ongoing crisis by engaging in activities beneficial for their community.

Bangladesh's efforts for Rohingya’s in Bhashan Char an example to the world: UNGA president

President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozker on Tuesday highly appreciated Bangladesh's efforts for Rohingyas in Bhasan Char saying it will be another example to the world on how to deal with refugees.

"This would be another example to the world on how to deal with refugees," he said in a joint media briefing at Foreign Service Academy.

The UNGA President said he could not visit Bhasan Char but he saw a video on Bhasan Char and acknowledged the high-level works in Bhasan Char including precautions and safety measures.

Bangladesh Coast Guard on Tuesday rescued 30 Rohingyas from a boat drifting in the Bay of Bengal near Teknaf of Cox's Bazar while making a trip from Bangladesh to Malaysia.

According to the coast guard, the rescued Rohingyas are residents of refugee camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.

Among the Rohingya people, five were children, five men and 20 women.

Till 1:00pm, the rescued people were kept under the coast guard custody at Baharchhar in Teknaf upazia. They were being handed over to the police at the time.

Bodies of three Rohingya found with throats cut in Cox's Bazar camp

The bodies of three people, including a married couple, have been found with their throats slashed in a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar's Ukhia.

The Armed Police Action Battalion (APBN) recovered the bodies from the Kutupalong Rohingya Camp 2 East in Rajapalong Union on Friday.

The dead have been identified as Nurul Islam, 33, his wife Mariam Khatun, 26, and sister-in-law Halima Khatun, 20, all residents of the camp, according to SP Naimul Haque, captain of APBn's Cox's Bazar-14 unit.

Covid-19: 10 Rohingyas dead, 507 infected since last year

A total of 507 Rohingya refugees were infected with Covid-19 in the camps of Cox's Bazar since the coronavirus outbreak started March last year.

Dr Md Mahbubur Rahman, civil surgeon of Cox's Bazar, confirmed the information to our Cox's Bazar staff correspondent.

Of the 507 infected Rohingyas, 10 died from Covid-19, the doctor said.

Currently, nearly 8,88,457 Rohingyas are living in 34 refugee camps in Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas of Cox's Bazar, added our correspondent.

According to the Cox's Bazar Civil Surgeon's office, a total of 7,590 people were infected with coronavirus in Cox's Bazar district till yesterday since March last year and 89 people died. Among them, 507 are Rohingya refugees and the remaining are local residents of Cox's Baza.
