Shahidul Haque made the remarks at a webinar on Thursday to establish justice for the Rohingya.

The talks were held on the sidelines of the 20th General Assembly of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The webinar was jointly organized by Bangladesh, Gambia and Brussels-based human rights group No Peace Without Justice. The discussion was moderated by Alison Smith, Director of No Peace Without Justice.

Joint statement calls for improving system of providing protection at refugee camps in Bangladesh

Dozens of Rohingya rights organizations on Tuesday denounced the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), an insurgent group recently involved in killing Rohingya at refugee camps in southeastern Bangladesh.

“The Rohingya community does not accept ARSA as a group that represents the ideals and interests of them in or outside of Burma (Myanmar). Thus, the group must not claim it represents the interests of the Rohingya nation,” said a joint statement signed by 22 Rohingya rights organizations, including the Arakan Rohingya National Organization (ARNO), the European Rohingya Council (ERC) and the Free Rohingya Coalition (FRC).

Twenty two Rohingya organisations in a statement on Tuesday denounced the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army for the latter’s recent activities and criminal associations along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

In the statement, they branded the ARSA, also known as Harakah Al Yakeen, as a criminal group.

They also appealed to the Bangladesh government and to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to work together to respond promptly when refugees report imminent threats, to provide immediate and effective protection to those in danger, and to ensure effective protection for those who report incidents.

At night in the refugee camps, with only a thin tarpaulin wall as protection, Mohammed waits for the men to come and kill him.

In less than a month, assassins have killed at least eight people in the Rohingya refugee settlements of southeastern Bangladesh, silencing those who have dared to speak out against the violent gangs that plague the camps. As with Mohammed, the militants threatened their victims before they killed, leaving their targets in a perpetual panic.

“I am living under the knife of a fearful and depressing life,” said Mohammed, a community organiser whose full name is not being used because of the documented risks he faces. “I came to Bangladesh from Myanmar because I would be killed there. Here, also, there are no guarantees for a safe life.”

Mohammad Hashim, an alleged Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) leader, has been found dead at the Whykong Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf.

The matter was confirmed to the media by SI Mahbubur Rahman of the Whykong Police Outpost at 10:30 pm on Tuesday.

Police did not issue a clear statement on the cause of death.

Hafizur Rahman Chowhdury, chief of Teknaf police, said they are making preparations to recover the body.

Hashim is known in the camp as the ARSA ‘second-in-command’.

The Rohingya refugee crisis, which entered its fifth year in August, is showing no signs of winding down. Repatriation of refugees is nowhere in sight, even as management of the large number of refugees that Bangladesh is hosting is getting increasingly complex for its government.

Bangladesh police have arrested nearly 40 refugees, including many suspected of involvement with illegal weapons and drugs, since they launched a crackdown against criminality at Rohingya camps after community leader Muhib Ullah was slain last month, an official said Tuesday.

Among the dozens of Rohingya refugees taken into custody as part of the crackdown, five are suspected of being linked directly to the Sept. 29 killing of Ullah, a prominent Rohingya activist, at his office in the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar district, according to the authorities.

BANGLADESH police arrested at least 16 Rohingya refugees in a series of raids on camps in Dhaka after the murder of a top leader of their community last week, officials said on Sunday (10).

Rights advocate Mohib Ullah was gunned down 10 days ago by unidentified assailants outside his office at Kutupalong, the world’s largest refugee settlement in Bangladesh’s southeast.

His family and fellow community leaders have blamed the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) – a militant outfit behind a series of attacks on Myanmar security posts – saying his growing popularity had enraged the group. ARSA has denied any involvement in the murder.

BANGLADESHI foreign minister AK Abdul Momen on October 2 vowed to bring the killers of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah to justice soon.

He said a vested quarter killed Mohib Ullah as he wanted to return to his home country of Myanmar.

"The government will take stern action against those involved in the killing. Nobody will be spared," he said.

This was the minister's first remarks after the global condemnation of the Rohingya leader's murder.

Police inBangladesh arrested three suspects believed to have links to an armed insurgent group among Rohingya refugees, as officials promised justice for the killers of a prominent Rohingya rights activist.

“The killers will certainly be brought to justice. None will be spared,” Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said on Saturday, three days after the murder of Mohib Ullah, the head of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH).

The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has detained another Rohingya man in connection with the killing of Rohingya community leader Mohammad Mohib Ullah in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya.

Thirty-five-year-old Mohammad Ilias was taken into custody around noon on Sunday, said APBn Captain and Superintendent of Police Mohammad Naimul Haq.

The detainee will be questioned, he said.

Law enforcers have detained a total of five suspects over Mohib Ullah’s death.
